Are you desperate to lose weight to be thin?

to be thinA lot of women are desperate to lose weight quickly and dream of having the silhouette of a “Top Model”. To be thin is certainly a laudable goal as it promotes health and is aesthetically pleasing (at least in our society). However, the thinness of models is questionable because, all too often it is not healthy.

Most models are far below their healthy weight. Women are biologically programmed to maintain a certain percentage of fat tissue to carry a pregnancy to term. When the body does not reach this minimum percentage of fat, menstrual cycle stops because the body recognizes that it could not carry a child. For the same reason, the sexual desire disappears.

In addition, the idealized figure now in fashion is one in which the hips are narrower than the shoulders, while the normal female shape – one that has been designed by nature to facilitate childbirth – is one which the hips are broader than the shoulders.

The current criteria of the “beautiful female” require women to reject their female body and modify it into a different body altogether: that of an adolescent male with, only a touch of femininity by having developed breasts.

Unfortunately, the majority of women are not aware that the model suggested is unrealistic and by comparing their bodies with one that is unattainable, they start to hate their bodies and want to change it.

In addition, certain moral qualities are associated with the model: a thin woman is regarded as disciplined, powerful, full of energy and capable of control. Whereas if a woman is perceived to be too big, she has let herself go, has lack of will, personal discipline, etc. Thus many women fall into this trap: their regard of oneself becomes dependent on their ability to look like the model which is impossible to achieve unless you go against nature. Women therefore end up felling disgusted, ashamed and wary with their body in the battle between reaching the “ideal” shape and the body trying to remain in a natural order. 

So next time when you look the mirror and feel desperate to lose weight and wish to be thin, ask yourself if the “ideal” shape you desire the healthiest one for you?

    Wow! That is such a great article helping women to redirect how they feel about themselves. It is so easy to get sucked into what society portrays what should or shouldn’t be beautiful, causing us to hate and harm ourselves.
